- When an Ottawa based community newspaper, approached me to make a series of films about the Ottawa Muslim community, I was a little wary about being asked to make features about my own community. How does one represent ones own community? Perhaps, I thought, simply by allowing their own voices to be heard through film. The first short piece was about a young Canadian spoken word artist of Somali origin, Sarah Musa. After many conversations with her, I realized that Sarah had struggled with identity for many years. Her struggle was not that she didn't know who she was, or that she was uncomfortable with her background, but that society around her wanted her labeled and tagged in a way that made their world more comfortable. Sarah refused any of the labels and the barriers those labels would place on her and has created her own identity - one that she expresses eloquently through her highly original spoken word poetry. This film is about Sarah Musa, as she sees herself. Poet, activist, Somali, Muslim, and proudly Canadian. This is who she is today, and the start of who she wishes to be in the future.
